Property Details

The name “Ship Builder’s Cottage” plays homage to its origins, a mid-19th century home built by a local Captain using surplus supplies from the ship builder’s yard. Over the decades, this vacation home has been modernized but the original oak wood plank floors are testaments to its past! Central air conditioning, and an addition done in the past 50 years or so, has added a full kitchen, bathroom and laundry room. From the kitchen there is a walk out to a large patio area with a bbq/grill ready for any outdoor cook!

Our vacation home has historical ambiance of an old Niagara-on-the-Lake cottage, with a 3 season view of the Niagara River! The location gives you all the advantages of living locally in a residential area within an easy stroll to the Queens Royal Park Gazebo, by the river front, you are also just 3 minute stroll to King and Queen Streets with all the shops, theatre, and restaurants. The Grocery Store is about a 10 minute walk but on your journey you will pass by all sorts of boutique food stores like Kurtz to get some of the most interesting dips, don’t forget Greaves’s jams for the best pickled beets ever…but they have jams and marmalades too!

As you walk up to Ship Builder’s Cottage, the front path leads you to a covered porch with two welcoming Adirondack chairs. A perfect spot to park yourself and watch the horse drawn carriages go by while enjoying an evening glass of wine or a good read with your favourite beverage.! Enter into the front door and you are welcomed with a light and airy feeling of an open living room area that flows through to the kitchen. This vacation homes offers two bedrooms with full sized beds and a pull out couch that is suitable for a child or a teenager. The main floor bedroom is off the living room through the opaque glass French style doors. The main floor bedroom has a full/double bed, closet and a dressing table. The other sleeping areas are upstairs. The upstairs is accessed by an open wooden stair case. The spacious landing is a great space to work, read or plan your day’s actives. By the window is a desk that is perfect for a lap top or writing letters while enjoying people watching! This area has lots of natural light. The second bedroom also has a full/double bed with an armour on the landing just outside the room. The beds are new and are so very pleasant and there are side tables with bedside lights that makes reading in bed something to look forward to!

From the living room, go down two steps to the spacious kitchen where the expanse of windows brings in the morning sun! French doors lead to the patio area which is perfect for shade in the afternoon! In spring, fall and winter enjoy the view of the river overlooking Fort George! Off the kitchen is a 3 piece bathroom. The claw foot tub with a sky light, just invites you to soak in a deep tub of bubbles and melt away those sore muscles from a bicycle trip or all the strenuous elbow bending at a wine tasting! There is also a shower conversion, for those who just want to get clean and go! The step into the tub is a bit high, so make sure you are steady on your feet.

The kitchen is spacious and the perfect hang out for a cook and your traveling companions to enjoy being together and preparing meals. The kitchen is equipped with dishes, cutlery, glasses and wine glasses for 5 people. In addition we have a coffee maker, kettle, fridge, stove, microwave and dishwasher. The harvest table is large enough for everyone to sit around one table and relax in the Windsor style wooden chairs. Off the kitchen is the bathroom and the laundry closet that has the washer and dryer.

In good weather you can enjoy the back patio which has seating , BBQ/grill and dining areas that makes it a comfortable space for all to enjoy. Several steps to the grass area is a well-kept yard that is grass and is fully fenced in. At the front of the house is a parking space for one car.

Location

Ship Builders Cottage is between the water front and Queen St., ideally located if you just want to park your car and walk everywhere! Even better if you want to bring your bike and explore the main trails Niagara Region has to offer.

Ship Builder's Cottage is just about a minute walk from the Gazebo in Queens Royal Park. This historic park is a land mark for many visitors in town. However, you can enjoy several of the lesser known waterfront trails that are within easy access to this vacation home.

As far as vacation rentals go in Niagara on the Lake, Ship Builders is a real gem. Built by one of the carpenters in the the late 19th centrury, he sourced f the lumber from the former ship building yard that is now the Niagara-on-the-Lake Sailing Club. The wood plank floors remain and offer the character and charm of yester year!

The historic area in Niagara on the Lake, includes the water front, Queen Street and some of the most expensive real estate in Canada. The shops on Queen Street are mostly independent shops offering a variety of bakeries, food stores, coffee shops, mens and women's shops, jewelry, antique, art galleries and craft stores. Also on Queen St., is the Wine shop, Liquor Store and the brewery called the Exchange.

The restaurants in the historic area seem to come and go, but we have a few staples like the Irish Harp, Corks, and my favourite the Angel Inn. Niagara on the Lake offers an ecletic collection of resturants that is sure to statisfy any foodie! After all we are the food capital of Canada! A couple of my favourites is the Niagara-on-the-Lake Golf Course (for the view and moderately priced), the Oban Inn for the charm, the Pillar and Post for the steak, and Queens Landing for the outoor bar.

The Vintage Inn's own a collection of hotels and quaint Inns, all have great restaurants . Some specialize in sushi, gourmet, french cuisine and other offer a viarity of delicious menus.

All of this is within easy walking distance of this vacation home. We are also just a stroll away from historic Navy Hall, Fort George and the Niagara-on-the-Lake museum. Many trails start (or end) in Niagara on the lake and you can bike and walk to most venues.

The wineries in the Niagara Region are mostly gathered around Niagara-on-the-Lake and lots have great restaurants so you can enjoy an evening of dining and wineing!

For the outdoor enthusiasts, the Whirlpool Jet Boat is a must do! Also bring your paddle board or kayack because there is a launch area just a 5 minute
