Between Christmas and New years in Niagara -on-the-Lake

What to do Niagara-on-the-Lake Boxing Day to New Year’s

Even without snow, this old little historic town is a delight to stroll the streets in the evening. Most houses that have residents that are not snow birds, have taken the time to decorate their homes. In particular a house on the Niagara Parkway near Reif Winery is a spectacular display of festive lights, floating balls and light sculptures of animals and Ferris wheels!   Another spectacular effort are two houses on charlotte St just near Niagara Street. Well worth the walk to see these houses and you can burn off some of those Christmas calories! A home on Yord Road in St Davids made the front page of the Niagara Advance… my goodness this home is something that makes you wonder… wonder how much time, how much effort and why???? But it’s worth the short drive to St Davids!

The week before Christmas and New Year’s is always a busy one with lots of special things going on in and around town! The film series continues at the Shaw Festival Theatre with a special showing of HomeAlone at noon on Monday. HobNob at the Charles Hotel at 209 Queen Street has the best Burgers on Thursday night special and pub night on Tuesdays(this goes on all winter!) . Fort George has some great events and of course the not to miss New Years Day Levee at Navy Hall on Byron St from 3 to 4:30 continues is 30 year tradition with music, light refreshments and firing the canon over the Niagara River!!

Also this is the season of spirited celebrations so please don’t Drink and Drive. The local cab company is Niagara-on-the-Lake Taxi 905-468-2661. The Holiday RIDE program is out in full force!

Our Christmas is usually a working one and we are happy to say that we are sold out for Christmas and New years and we had everyone all snuggled in their beds Christmas eve, so we had a very relaxing Christmas Day!

On Christmas Day all the hotel restaurants remained open, but Boxing day has everything opened with some great shopping buys! Just Christmas store can get you a head start on next years plans and the Irish Design shop has its winter sale on now…best to shop early so that you still get the selection.   I have two favourite shops between Niagara-on-the-Lake and Niagara Falls, Kurtz Culinary Creations part of Kurtz Orchard and Gracewood (a wedding venue extraordinaire!) The shop on Queen st has beautiful sauces, jams, appetizers and kitchen gadgets nice for days when you just want to have some nibbles about for grazing.   My other spot is Beauchapeau Hat Shop and Boxing Week Sale is 50% off!

For those shoppers on a mission the Outlet Collection mall off of Glendale Avenue by the QEW has some hard core sales from Eddy Bower to Bass Pro Shop, Wine Country Vintners, Imperial Meats and the newly open Zwilling J.A. Henckels with opening specials of up to 70% off!

The Niagara Falls Winter Festival of Lights continues with the Spirit of Niagara Sound and Light show presented by Fallsview Casino and NIagara Tourism.  The light show is 15 minutes and runs on the hour and is free!  the location is 6546 Fallsview Blvd. Niagara Falls at the Oakes Hotel Overlooking the Falls.  The drive along the Niagara Parkway past the falls  with colourful spot lights.

But for me, the shopping is over for the year and I am going to lazily enjoy some quiet time.   Without the snow I can’t cross country ski or snow shoe the local trails through the forests located just steps from the commons and along the bike path following the Niagara River, but its great just for walking and seeing the sights. This year in around 4:00 to 5:00 I have heard a barred owl hooting at me, I have yet to spot it, so maybe this week will be my opportunity. Especially with the full moon glowing over the trails of Niagara on the Lake!
