Spring is in the air!

A sure sign that winter is over and spring has arrived, the snowdrops and aconite are blooming!

We recently visited White Meadows Farm the trees were being tapped to produce maple syrup.   The conditions have been ideal;  warm during the day and then dipping below freezing at night so this should be a really good year. The visit started out by sitting on bales of hay on a wagon drawn by a tractor, which took us to the forest where the trees had been tapped.  Along the trail there were various stands with people dressed in costume explaining how the syrup was discovered and the different stages of making it.  Things have progressed a lot since it was originally discovered, there are 45 kilometers of pipe tapped into the trees, a long way from just a bucket hung on the tree!  It was interesting and educational and a great way to spend an afternoon, also lots of fun for the kids too!  The finale was the stand where we could get maple syrup on a stick, which had been frozen in the snow, delicious, very sticky kept everyone quiet for a while!!  Who doesn’t like pancakes with maple syrup? they had those too.  Also there was a great little store where they sold different culinary items made with maple syrup, all too good to resist.

After all the winter events in NOTL;  The Ice Wine Festival; specialty tastings at the local wineries; the fantastic movies being shown on Saturdays at the Shaw Festival Theatre, now we’re all geared up for the spring and summer.  For folks who enjoy the theatre, the line up this year is fantastic, plays for every taste, you can check out the programme at .
