We still get to enjoy a local paper called the Niagara Advance. It is really enjoyable to sit with a coffee to see what is going on in our little community during the winter months. Niagara-on-the-Lake is a 4 season community but in the winter between the lack of tourists and the local snow birds, the town seems to hibernate…well on the surface anyhow!
This week is the big announcement that Kim Mitchell will be at the Virgil Stampede on May 16,2014. At the Virgil Sports Park we are attracting more and more visitors to this annual event. All proceeds go toward improving our community. Last year we had the splash pad open up!!
Two candidates have registered to be in the Mayoral Race. The Lord Mayor’s position has some familiar names as candidates for the fall election. The incumbent Dave Ekes will run and so far the only opposition is Pat Darte who came in a close second in 2014.
The Epicurean is running some specials in January including waving corkage fee if you bring in your theatre receipt from the Shaw Film Fest! Caroline Cellars and Trius also have some great lunch and dinner specials. And Ravine Winery has ice skating free!! The Trius menu featers Chef Frank Dodd with a special invitation to enjoy the Winter Blues Menus!
Sadly in the paper is the ongoing debate about the remaining public school, Parliament Oak scheduled for closing. How can a town survive with any public schools????
On a more exciting note is the Niagara wine industry’s announcement that on Feb 28 they will have the 26th annual Cuvee event. Not cheap at $200 a ticket, but where else will you get to talk to the wine masters of the Niagara region! The Cuvee en Route passport covers the 3 day event from the Grand Tasting to the convention at the casino. The funds raised is for the Niagara Community Foundation and supports the local arts, heritage, environment, and community development programs in Region of Niagara.
