Wondering what to get as a souvenir?

So you are staying at your vacation home in Niagara on the Lake.  Its been a great time and you are so glad somebody recommended the Vacation rentals managed by Niagara Holiday Rentals.  But now you are wondering what can I bring home that really reminds me of my holiday or what gift can I bring that someone hard to please.   Canada is such a melting pot of cultures its difficult to truly claim something as authentically Canadian.  Hudson Bay Blankets are too expensive, not everyone like maple syrup candy and people can be such wine snobs no matter how much you spend.   (for a surprise to your wine snob friends, have them over and enjoy anything from Big Head Winery on Hunter Road in Niagara-on-the-Lake... you will be the envy of all to introduce your friends to these vintages at a medium range price).

Finally we have an answer for a souvenir that will need no explanation.  Unless you have been living under a rock, anyone in North America and perhaps in any cold climate country that has Hockey, has heard of the iconic #99, Wayne Gretzky, the legend himself.   Well now the legend continues.  The newly opened Wayne Gretzky Estates Winery & Distillery has been causing traffic jams and parking headaches since opening to the public last weekend.   We have been able to enjoy some of the wines for a while now, and I would say as a distinctly non congnisor of fine wine,  that they are ok.   I have had the merlot and thought it decent.   This past weekend I celebrated my hockey crazy brother with a bottle of pinot grigo .   It was enjoyed by all, although we all agree that it was interesting.   What was nice though, was that everyone liked it, maybe not loved it but to get a diverse group of people to enjoy several bottles of one type of wine until there wasn't a drop left, is pretty good!

I haven't been to the Estate winery yet, but you can purchase Wayne Gretzky wine at the Wine Country Store on queen St, or at any LCBO (liquor store).   However I don't know anything about the Whisky and that will be on my short term bucket list for this winter!

The Wayne Gretzky wine brand was launched 10 years ago and now they have about a dozen different wines and a some Ice Wines.   I am not crazy about ice wines, but a cab merlot is pretty good as a digestif or a desert wine.  Cabernet Merlot Icewines are also the least expensive of the different vintages. The Ice House Winery is one of my favourites spots in Niagara on the Lake, and if you are staying at one of our vacation rentals we sometimes have wine tasting coupons.  This is the best because of the Ice Wine slushie.  However, always have a designated driver for this wine tasting because at the end you have had an awful lot of wine as you get to sample 3 different types paired with salt, savoury and sweet!

So back to the point of my Niagara Holiday Rentals Stuff we like to recommend blog.    I never know what to bring over to somebodies house because its difficult to know what they like to drink or would enjoy a little thank you token for being invited over.  Well problem solved.  Every Canadian, ever sports fan and every girl (of  a certain age) loves Wayne Gretzky, so if its a token gift, a mid priced bottle of wine or a chance to enjoy a glass of whiskey with some favourite friends, we now have something that needs no further explanation of where and when you got the gift from!!
