Fort George

Soldiers in redcoats fire muskets, clouding the air with black powder smoke. Music drifts past blockhouses, a historic powder magazine, and cannons on the lookout. Step straight from the genteel Victorian town of Niagara-on-the-Lake into the War of 1812 at Fort George, a military post that defended Upper Canada against American attacks.

Fort Mississauga

Fort Mississauga is a large, square, brick defensive tower set within the remains of earthworks on the shoreline of the Niagara River. On the landward side, it is surrounded by golfing greens located within the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Fort Mississauga National Historic Site is located on the grounds of the Niagara-on-the-Lake Golf Club. A pedestrian trail starts at the corner of Simcoe and Front Streets and leads to the fort.

Landscape of Nations

A living memorial dedicated to the contributions and sacrifices made by Six Nations and Native Allies on Queenston Heights and throughout the War of 1812 inspires citizens to learn and acknowledge the critical role that Native peoples played in the defense of this land and the ability of Canada to remain free.

As a commemorative public artwork the memorial also recognizes the historic ceremony of peace and reconciliation held in Niagara on August 31 and September 1, 1815 that restored peace among the Native nations who fought on opposing sides.

Queenston Heights

Nestled high atop the Niagara Escarpment, Queenston Heights Park combines leisure and history in one scenic location. At the entrance to this historic park, visitors are greeted by grand carpet bedding displays that surround both the Brock and Laura Secord Monuments.

  • Queens Royal Park – located at the end of King St at Niagara River – Gazebo, waterfront walk, picnic tables, washroom

  • Simcoe Park – located at Queen St and King St - wading pool, bandshell, picnic tables, playground, benches

  • Ryerson Park – located along the Niagara Blvd in Chautauqua, water front, Best sunsets bring a blanket and bug spray! Walking distance from Dreamweaver Cottage, Butterfly Cottage and La Vignette.

  • Veteran's Memorial Park - 370 King Street – seasonal outdoor pool, tennis courts, volley ball, soccer, picnic tables, playground. Walking distance from Parkview Cottage and The Bluebird.

  • Rye Street Park – located off Rye St. by Cottage St. – tennis courts, basketball pad, soccer field, picnic tables, rubber fibre playground, benches. If you are staying at 741 On The Park, you can access the park through the backyard.

  • Commons – located at Charlotte St. and John St., (look for gravel path lined with trees, its leash free but remember to scoop if your dog poops!). Also accessible behind Butler's Barracks, at the end of Mary St. Walking distance from Piper's Getaway (pet-friendly cottage).
