What did I learn on Canada Day - July 1, 2017

Added: Jul 02, 2017
Category: News About NOTL

To celebrate Canada's 150th Birthday, I decided to learn a little more about Niagara-on-the-Lake.  What surprised me is what I thought I knew I didn't.  Go figure?!  So, in addition to clarifying some history, I thought I'd also find out what else I wasn't aware of about Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Originally named Newark, our town was settled by the British military in 1781.  The commons was a training ground and the area we now call Chautauqua was where families camped while their loved ones were in training.  If you look at a google map, you can see Chautauqua by the circle and spokes.   Later this area became summer homes to those who lived in Chautauqua NY and the streets are named after them.   But that was in and around the 1900's, so I am jumping ahead of myself!

Newark was the capital of Upper Canada and our historic Navy Hall held our first parliament in 1792.  The war of 1812 between the English and the Americans caused the capital to be moved further away from the American border.  The town was known as Niagara, but it was confused with Niagara Falls, so to differentiate itself, in the 1880's the town was renamed Niagara-on-the-Lake!

The Niagara Parks Garden Trail takes you from Fort George in Niagara-on-the-Lake all along the Niagara Parkway to Fort Erie.   The Niagara Parkway follows the Niagara River and there are lots of vistas, gardens, and historical sites along the way. You can bike, hike, or drive!

Along the way in Queenston you will come across and interesting McKenzie Printery and Newspaper Museum (1 Queenston St - 905-242-5676)  - really a place to learn about in a relatively short period of time , there has been inovation to share knowledge and how that has shaped us today!

Did you know that you can have tours at the Niagara Teaching Winery, we also have food tours, ghost tours and garden tours!  The first friday of every December is the candlelight stroll tour around old town!  We also have a Wine Country Cooking School, where you can take day classes (1339 Lakeshore, 905-468-8304).

Niagara on the Lake has its own airport and it is home to the St Catharines Flying Club.  For $100  you and 2 others can get a 1/2 flight in and around Niagara!   A custom private flight, and sometimes you can choose the plane!

Lastly I want to tell you about Happy Rolphs Animal Farm.  This is a local farm that has animals and trails and is a lot of fun no matter what your age.  In addition, you can see the memorial to the 27 Canadians who lost their lives in the Twin Towers in New York on September 11, 2001.  Its amazing how many of us where touched by this tragedy, but few have taken the time and their own resources to memorialize our fellow Canadians who were just working at their daily jobs when they fell victim to terrorism .  The 9/11 memorial trail is lined with 27 deciduous trees along the path, one in honour of each Canadian who lost their life. 650 Read Road, 905-688-5601  http://www.stcatharines.ca/en/playin/HappyRolphs.asp

I am sure there is a lot more that I don't know about this town, but as I find out, I will up date this blog!  But for now I hope you all enjoyed the Canada Day celebrations and comemerating that our great country is 150 years young!
